Bridging Psychology and Engineering: Undergraduate Conceptions of Human Systems Engineering

Abstract

Instruction that links engineering and psychology — how people think, feel, and behave — may enable students to better understand the people they are engineering for (e.g., users and clients) and themselves as engineers. In this project, we surveyed students’ conceptions of human systems engineering and attitudes toward psychology and engineering. We aggregate responses across three survey iterations to discuss students’ knowledge and beliefs. Findings suggest that many undergraduates had (a) only superficial understanding of human-centered engineering and its value, and (b) very little knowledge of relevant methodologies. However, introductory coursework in human systems engineering seemed to be a promising entry point for human-centered engineering.
