Does Location Matter? The Impact of Dual Enrollment on College Readiness and Early Academic Momentum

Abstract

Despite the positive effects of dual enrollment (DE) on academic outcomes, it remains unclear if a greater exposure to college environment when taking DE on a college campus leads to better postsecondary outcomes. Following psychological and learning theories, we used a nationally representative dataset and examined whether different DE delivery locations affect students’ college readiness and early academic momentum. Propensity score-adjusted regression analyses based on a nationally representative dataset revealed that students taking DE exclusively on a college campus have a higher high school GPA and are more likely to attend a postsecondary institution than students taking no DE on a college campus. The delivery location of DE does not influence students’ early academic momentum after entering college.
