Abstract

This narrative research study explored teacher perceptions and implementation of youth spoken word pedagogies (YSWP) taught at a three-day professional development institute. The rationale for this study was to understand how teachers make sense of YSWP and create plans to operationalize new knowledge about YSWP in their future lessons. The objectives of the study were to capture teacher perceptions of their personal and professional practice of youth spoken word pedagogies. The population of this study were 20 licensed classroom teachers and community teaching artists on Maui, Hawaii teaching text-based subjects and arts integration in various school and community settings. The data for this study included three handwritten open-ended narrative reflections and one lesson plan written by each participant.
