This research explores ways that children engage in inquiry and debugging strategies while using CRISPEE, a novel tangible technology to explore bioengineering . This paper presents a case study of a 6-year-old child’s interactions with CRISPEE in order to learn how he used scientific reasoning and debugging strategies to discover new concepts about the tool. This case was selected because of prototype malfunctions that occurred, allowing us to explore his sense-making when faced with inconsistent feedback from CRISPEE. The data confirms prior research that young children can maintain theories even in the face of conclusive evidence to the contrary, and that debugging may be a useful frame to engage children to use inquiry strategies.
