No Parties and Playdates: Muslim Mothers and Navigating Social Integration for Their Children in America

Abstract

For Muslim mothers the complexity of teaching religious, cultural and social values is magnified by establishing Islamic values which may conflict with dominant western norms. Restrictions on attending in school and out of school events such as dances along with parties and playdates may lead to a sense of alienation for Muslim youth. This study aims to explore immigrant and non-immigrant Muslim mothers’ perceptions regarding their children’s social integration and the intersectionality of their Muslim, American and social identities. Preliminary findings indicate similarities among the mothers in this study regarding their perceptions and concerns about socialization practices. Furthermore, teachers and schools can gain a deeper understanding of the social identity and social integration struggles Muslim youth and their families’ face.
