Imagining Dewey: Artful Works and Dialogue About Art as Experience

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the genesis of a book that gathers essays from international authors, accompanying ekphrastic artworks, and resulting transactional dialogue, which functions as a pedagogical companion to Dewey’s Art as Experience (AaE) (1934/2005). Essays and artwork reconstruct and challenge ideas found in AaE through a present-day lens of personal relations, cultural encounters, agonist interpretive art, and critical pedagogy. It provides insight into aesthetic learning experience focused on Deweyan thought through an integrated doubled focus: (1) text-based philosophical analysis and (2) present day arts-integrated analysis/interpretation through artworks.
