Estimating the Effects of Classroom Racial Composition on Teachers' Perceptions of Working Conditions

Abstract

This paper looks at the relationship between teachers’ perceptions of their work conditions and the racial compositions of the classes they teach. We use data from the Measures of Effective Teaching (MET) study, which includes data on over 2,700 teachers from more than 300 schools in 6 large urban school districts in the U.S. Using multilevel regression modeling, we find that teacher satisfaction with specific working conditions varies significantly by the race of their students. Specifically, as we observe increases in the percent of Black, Latinx, and Asian students in a teacher’s classroom, we notice a decrease in teacher satisfaction across many measures. Other results, and observed patterns are also discussed.
