This paper uses Eisner’s educational criticism and connoisseurship as a method to explore learning curves, best practices, and the benefits of artmaking as state mandated culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) educational standards are implemented in an art teacher preparation program. We follow the experiences of visual art preservice teachers as they observe and apply specific culturally responsive and language acquisition teaching strategies in elementary art classrooms and after school studio art settings. Descriptive vignettes and examples of artwork are used to help critically explore the experiences of the preservice teachers, professors, cooperating teachers, and students. Rather than pinpointing definitive answers, we seek insightful dialogue that explores culturally responsive teaching and the unique power of the arts to promote student success.
