The purpose of this education design research (EDR) study was to explore the application of case studies designed to increase content relevance and learner motivation. As a result of this work, an evidence-based design was created for how to enhance the presentation of case studies for digital reading experiences. Through an iterative approach, we used surveys, interviews, prototypes, and biometrics to identify key elements of the case study experience that impact students’ behavior in a digital reading experience. We propose specific elements that should be present when using case studies to effectively increase relevance and motivation.
