Team Effectiveness in Creative Problem Solving: The Role of Self-Regulation in Predicting Team Performance

Abstract

This study investigated collective creative problem solving (CPS) processes and beliefs within a self-regulated learning (SRL) framework in a younger population, in order to further the research and provide practical advice to practitioners. Third through twelfth grade students (N=120) competed in a creative problem-solving competition in which appraisers evaluated their creative problem-solving (e.g. teamwork, creativity, effective solution). When accounting for age, three motivational and strategic planning variables (having a role, outcome expectations, and creative collective efficacy) within the forethought phase accounted for 18.2% of the total variance in the team score. Overall, this study provides a) foundational work for the examination of collective CPS in a younger population and b) guidance for adults mentoring young teams of creative problem-solvers.
