Factors Affecting Students' Effort and Achievement in Veterinary College Courses

Abstract

We investigated the extent to which students’ perceptions in veterinary college courses related to their course effort, final course grade, and course ratings. In addition, we examined why students put forth effort in veterinary school courses. We surveyed veterinary college students enrolled in a first-year course (n = 213) and second-year course (n = 203) using close-ended items and an open-ended item. We analyzed the responses using structural equation modeling and a qualitative approach based on grounded theory. Compared to studies of undergraduate students, students’ effort in veterinary courses was more related to their desire to succeed as future veterinarians and to achieve school-life balance. Understanding these motivation factors could help instructors design more engaging instruction.
