Uncovering Racial Inequities in School Suspensions and Embodying Care in an Alternative Learning Setting

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

Through this mixed methods study, the researchers examine the disciplinary records of 113 students in grades 6-12 who received school suspensions and were placed in an alternative learning setting, RSP. Data also include interviews from program staff within RSP. Critical race theory supports an analysis of the salience of race in school disciplinary practices. Quantitative findings highlight the overrepresentation of Black male students who receive school suspensions compared to the Black student population in focal students’ school district. Qualitative findings highlight program structures within RSP, such as enacting genuine care and creating curricula relevant to students’ lives. Data from the study informs future research and practice focused on creating more equitable school spaces for students who face inequitable disciplinary practices.
