"Am I My Brother's Keeper?" A University-Based Mentoring Program for Black Urban Youth

Abstract

This paper presents outcome data from the pilot year and subsequent re-engagement years of the Urban Youth Leadership Academy (UYLA), a university-based college access program for urban youth that provides longitudinal support from high school admissions to college enrollment. The UYLA is designed to create pathways to college for middle school students of color through their involvement in leadership building activities, community service, and college-going activities and mentorship from adult males of color at each stage of the college and career pipeline who are chartering their own pathways to success. Findings will include analysis from initial self-report measures and follow-up focus group interviews.
