Visual Art Education and Social-Emotional Learning of Students in Rural Kenya

Abstract

Kenya is an emerging democratic society. A new constitution was ratified in 2010 and national elections were held in 2013 and 2017. Given these changes, how would the provision of equal education opportunities contribute to the public good in Kenya? This experimental case study, by means of a mixed method, presents the effects of visual art education, which is limited to privileged minorities in Kenya, on the social-emotional learning of disadvantaged rural students. The study concludes with a description of its implications for civic education policy in Kenya. Based on a collaboration among education researchers, teachers, a school leader, and the village community, it also discusses appropriate approaches to art education given the social context.
