Promoting Hope and Change in Design-Based Makerspace Research Through the Bartlett, Hawthorne, and Dewey Effects

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Invoking inspiration from the work of Brown (!992), the effectiveness of a design-based research study conducted with a grade six teacher and her students over three iterations in a makerspace environment is deliberated. While acknowledging the often overwhelming expectations found in public school settings, the authors analyze the selected methodology in light of three effects: the Bartlett Effect, the Hawthorne Effect, and the Dewey Effect. This leads them to conclude that the chosen methodology offers a hopeful stance in education by providing opportunities not only for individual student and teacher learning, but also by adding to the theoretical discourse and through the development of design principles for learning in school makerspaces.
