Rasch-Based Measurement Development: A Formative Evaluation Instrument for College Teaching

Abstract

Quality assurance of higher education is an essential topic that is concerned by scholars for a long time. With the increase of college enrollment, providing high-quality education is the priority of American higher education. The purpose of this study is to provide preliminary validity evidence for a new formative instrument, which is designed to evaluate teaching effectiveness by measuring student classroom engagement and learning gains. In total, 634 undergraduate students in a 4-year research university participated in this study. The multidimensional Rasch model was employed. Various evidence supported that the new instrument is reliable and valid. The new instrument measures teaching effectiveness in a new perspective and provide college teachers with a new tool to improve the quality of instruction.
