The Role of Male Allies in Achieving Gender Equity in STEM

Abstract

Women face many obstacles in reaching parity in STEM. Often when we think about male allies, we consider men who mentor, sponsor, and advocate for women to be treated fairly – and this is especially true in male-dominated industries and in places where women hold few high-level positions. Where men are in the majority, their behaviors and actions can help to address inequities within their immediate sphere, but research shows that they also have the ability to serve as role models and spokespersons for other men. This study synthesizes the available research to identify factors of effective male allyship in improving gender equity in STEM.
