Utility-value interventions have shown a high potential to foster students’ motivation and achievement. Yet, further research is warranted to better understand how they can be successfully implemented in the classroom setting. This study was therefore aimed to investigate how different measures of implementation fidelity were associated with the effectiveness of a utility-value intervention delivered in 52 math classrooms by master’s students or math teachers. Notable differences between the two conditions were found in implementation fidelity, with master’s students showing higher adherence and quality of delivery. Variation in implementation fidelity assessed from the students’ perspective was associated with changes in utility value in the two intervention conditions. This study thus contributes to identifying the mechanisms through which utility-value interventions work.
