Making Collaborative Course Design for Professional Education Successful: A Qualitative Study on Team Dialogues

Abstract

Due to the demands of the labor market, professional education needs to shift to transdisciplinary education. Collaborative course design therefore becomes necessary. Universities, however, need to be aware of how teacher teams develop new educational units in order to support these teams. This study looks into the design process of two teacher teams, and focuses on the design topics and the specific design acts within teams’ design conversations. Furthermore, the evolution of these topics and design acts over time is studied. Our findings show that most conversations involve neglecting important design topics. Moreover, a lack of depth in the design conversations is identified, especially towards the end of the teams’ design cycle, highlighting the need for expert support.
