Research on teacher burnout has mainly focused on job demands and job resources of teachers and effects on strain and wellbeing (referring to the Job Demands-Resources (JDR) Model). Yet, personal resources of teachers are less focused on. Thus, this study explores the role of a variety of personal resources for teacher strain and wellbeing. Results from a questionnaire study with 84 South African teachers show a differentiated pattern highlighting that some personal resources are more beneficial than others. Exploratory analyses also indicate that non-linear relationships may exist. Study results add to the limited research on personal resources within the JDR model. Moreover, results are especially relevant in the context of South Africa where teachers often work under adversarial conditions.
