Exploring the Impact of Service-Learning Experiences on Outcomes for College Students in Taiwan

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the impact of service-learning experience on outcome for college students in Taiwan. The subjects were 321 college students participating in service-learning programs in 2014. Questionnaires were used for data collection. Service-learning experiences included preparation, service, reflection, and celebration, and service-learning outcomes consisted of knowledge integration and application, cognitive complexity, intrapersonal development, interpersonal competence, humanitarianism and civic engagement, and practical competence. The results were as follows: 1. the impact model of service-learning experience on learning outcomes had a good fit; 2. service, reflection, and celebration had significantly positive effects on all learning outcomes. Moreover, preparation had significantly positive effects on learning outcomes partially. Finally, the implications for colleges implementing high-quality service-learning programs are discussed.
