Peace Education as a Controversial Issue: A Case Study of "the Peace Case"

Mon, April 20, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This qualitative case study examines the Peace Case as it relates to peace education as a controversial issue and teachers’ freedom of speech. For this purpose, it discusses peace education as a controversial issue and examines a post-Garcetti case, which is known as “ the Peace Case.” The findings suggest that as teachers are the ones who address the “captive audience” as a requirement of their jobs, it is vital that they become legally literate. Given that the study of controversial issues is a central component of democratic education, teacher educators should rise to the challenge of enhancing the teacher education programs by incorporating particular courses directly handling controversial issues in the classroom.
