Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to establish listening as a concrete utterance, aptly disposed to critical discourse analysis. I analyze popular (viral) media through the analytic of listening gesture and the lens of power. I ground Bakhtin’s concept of ‘utterance’ and Bourdieu’s examination of listening via the body, in the language of gesture. This study asks: What do viral media texts reveal about the relationship between listening and power and why should educational researchers attend to them?
