A major facilitator for the development of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in STEM, amongst others, are considered to be practical teaching experiences. While researchers developed a refined understanding of the structure of STEM teachers’ PCK, the development of PCK towards applicable and situation-adequate knowledge remains unclear. The goal of the present study was to search the existing research on PCK and practice for established links between PCK and practical teaching experiences in STEM teacher education and characterize and synthesize the studies with regards to PCK and practice. We found that study methods largely comprise qualitative case-study methodology, with specific PCK models which are widely used and tools that link PCK and practice for STEM teachers.
