Transformative Co-Mentoring: Fostering Change in Individuals, Institutions, Lives, and the Medical and Health Professions

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

The purpose of this session is to present the concept of Transformative Co-mentoring (TCM) and demonstrate how it is being put into practice in Roots to Wings (RTW), an initiative to create pathways into the medical profession for students living on Native American lands of the Yakama Nation. TCM involves co-mentoring relationships between school and university medical students with the goal of creating a lasting change in them, the environment in which they function and the medical profession. TCM considers the context in which the co-mentoring occurs and the content which must be learned, transmitted or created. The TCM model has applications for those seeking to create more inclusive educational and professional environments in any environment or profession.
