It Takes Two: Exploring the Role of Early Childhood Educators in Kindergarten Assessment

Tue, April 21, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

Research has shown the benefits for increased student learning and greater long-term success when ECEs and teachers collaborate to use play-based pedagogies and assessment to support learning targets (Corter & Pelletier, 2010). What remains absent in the research is a close examination of how ECEs meaningfully contribute to the assessment of student learning. The absence of this research is in part due to the recent onset of this model for supporting kindergarten students and the emphasis on assessment as an ongoing activity in classrooms to monitor student growth (OME< 2016b). Hence the purpose of this study was to explore ECEs' roles and responsibilities in supporting students' learning through assessment within a team-based teaching model of play-based kindergarten education.
