Communities as Intellectual and Dialogic Spaces: Developing Collaborative, Critical, and Transformative Research Communities

Abstract

This study investigates community-based models of research and how these can be used to develop and promote reciprocal university-community partnerships and help universities and academic researchers rethink their role within community settings. The project focuses on a few particular projects that rely on participatory and/or collaborative processes and premise local knowledge as a way of addressing specific issues and problems, and that take place in diverse contexts (in Taiwan, Puerto Rico, and Chicago). This project uses these case studies to identify productive elements of research projects and initiatives that bring together grassroots organizations and academic institutions of higher learning and thus inform a variety of university-community partnership efforts, such as engaged research, service learning initiatives, and community-based research studies.
