This study examines the development of interest profiles of student teachers from the beginning to the end of their course of study within a 5-year period. Interest profiles were assessed according Holland's RIASEC model drawing on a large sample of student teachers within the German National Educational Panel Study. Comparing profiles from Wave 1 and Wave 9 of the panel survey it is shown that, although the interest profiles are generally quite stable, students who left the teacher education program show a greater change in interest profile than those who successfully pass the course of study. Therefore we can conclude that interests play a role in succeeding in education and career, as proposed by Holland's RIASEC model.
