Exploring the Sustainable Effects of Gamification on Children's Learning: A Study on the Reading Battle

Sat, April 18, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Gamification has been proven effective in facilitating students’ motivation and engagement. However, few studies explored whether such effects could be sustainable on learning. This study addresses the research gap by investigating the stability of the effects of a gamified reading platform called Reading Battle in elementary schools of Hong Kong. Users of Reading Battle were surveyed, and semi-structured interviews were administered to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. Findings reveal that gamification pedagogy has positive influences on children’s reading, including interest and motivation raising, habit construction, as well as ability improving. Moreover, these positive impacts would be maintained even after the participants stopped using the platform. This study proves the effects of gamification pedagogy are not short-lived.
