Schooling and UNESCO Heritage Sites in Latin America: A Participatory Video Youth Participatory Action Research Initiative

Abstract

: This paper will showcase experiences of Afro Latinx and Indigenous youth through a transnational Participatory Video (YPAR) initiative across three different countries. The purpose of the initiative is to investigate UNESCO’s impact on identity discussions and educational curriculum of Heritage Studies in sites located in Latin America. The study looks to illustrate how youth in heritage sites understand their identities through arts-based dialogue and collective construction of narrative (Freire, 2000; Wang & Burris, 1997). And also, if UNESCO’s standards of preservation emerge in identity related conversations in school settings. It is also important to highlight that authorship and findings will be attributed to youth. They will serve as primary investigators and narrative builders in the process described in this study.
