Demographic Effects in School and Social-Emotional Variables: Findings From Over Two Million Students

Abstract

In this paper, we analyzed survey data from over two million 3-12th graders in American schools to understand how student and school demographics vary across a broad range of school climate and social-emotional variables. We observe relatively large effects of grade level and race/ethnicity, as well as smaller effects of gender, poverty, and English-language fluency. Effects are topic-specific, and our results underscore the importance of examining the intersections of demographic variables such as gender and grade-level rather than merely examining one variable at a time if one is to achieve a deep understanding of student development and its implications for educational practice and policy.
