The purpose of this study was to examine pedagogical approaches used in two community choir settings. Data included observations of rehearsals, two interviews with directors, and interviews with three singers in each ensemble. Findings are presented in categories of planning, implementation, and assessment and include evidence from the directors, singers and the researchers regarding pedagogy in these ensembles in comparison with school-based choirs. Implications will assist teacher educators in preparation preservice and inservice teachers for work in community settings.
