We use data from the 2012/2014 Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) to examine problem solving skills in technology rich environments (PSTRE), participation in adult education and training (AET), sex, and wages in Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the U.S. Continued skill development over the life course is necessary for workers to remain employable in technologically advanced economies. At the same time, gender-based disparities in income are an issue in many countries. In all of the countries, PSTRE scores decline with age and people with higher PSTRE scores were more likely to participate in AET. There were no clear patterns of age or gender-based income differences based on PSTRE scores.
