Cooperative Learning in Physical Education: Students' Voices on Social and Emotional Learning

Abstract

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is recognized as an integral part of Physical Education (PE). The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of SEL in elementary PE using Cooperative Learning (CL) as a pedagogical model. A case study design (Stake, 2006) gathered qualitative data from four elementary schools in Aotearoa New Zealand for two years. Inductive analysis and constant comparison were used to analyze student interviews and field notes. Four themes emerged: Being part of a team, learning how to listen, helping and encouraging others, and making physical education fair. Findings indicate CL can develop students’ SEL in PE and highlights the paramount significance of PE, CL and other pedagogical models in teaching students SEL in schools.
