Assessing Pedagogical Judgment: Developing Teachers That See All Students as Capable, Creative, and Curious

Abstract

To support our teacher candidates in implementing exemplary pedagogies (e.g., Darling-Hammond, 2006) in their clinical experiences, we needed better ways to assess their self-analysis of their teaching. We operationalized Horn and Campbell’s (2015) notion of “pedagogical judgement” to develop a “pedagogical judgement rubric” (Author et al, under review). The rubric provides a framework for pedagogical judgement, including qualities that could be demonstrated through clinically-based courses. In this paper, we disseminate the findings from the next phase of our work with the PJR, where we embarked on creating a system for supporting our candidates to develop sophisticated pedagogical judgement.
