An Analysis of the Crosscutting Concept in Research Articles

Abstract

Given the call for the integration of the crosscutting concepts (CCCs) in the Next Generation Science Standards, this literature review summarizes and analyzes the use of CCCs within the field. The resulting 101 articles from six major science education journals were distilled to those used the CCCs within the research. These articles used the CCCs in one of five ways: a framing for development of learning opportunities, a part of deeper learning, as a way to bridge across disciplines, as linked to the use of the science practices, or as a culturally linked type of knowledge. By contributing to understanding how CCCS are being used by researchers, this work has implications for using the CCCs to support learning.
