Putting Poverty in Its Place: Lessons and Learning From Children's Neighbourhoods Scotland

Abstract

This paper reflects on Children’s Neighbourhoods Scotland (CNS), a multi-disciplinary programme based in the University of Glasgow. CNS takes a place-based approach to working across education and public services. The model being developed sees researchers and practitioners from different disciplines collaborate in seeking approaches to tackling the poor outcomes experienced by children and young people living in high-poverty neighbourhoods. CNS has the empowerment of children, young people and their families and communities at its core. The paper sets out the early research that has been done to inform the development of CNS as the programme begins to expand to work in urban, small town and rural sites, and sets out the learning and associated challenges and opportunities.
