Views of the Core: Parents' and Teachers' Perspectives on Teaching Common Core Math to Children

Abstract

The effect of Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSSM) on elementary students’ mathematics learning has been the topic of speculation. While some are of the opinion that instruction based on the CCSSM is a step in the right direction, others insist that the standards are developmentally inappropriate. In this proposal, we provide teachers’ and parents’ view of sustaining the CCSSM in school and at home through instruction and homework help. We found that both teachers and parents agree about children’s improved conceptual understanding of mathematics concepts in some areas, but there are some problematic aspects as well. We found that parents’ busy schedules, disagreements about problem-solving strategies, and anxiety related to math learning impede math learning in families.
