Learning and Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language: A Systematic Review

Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Despite the growth of research in learning and teaching Chinese as foreign language (CFL), no systematic review of this kind has been published so far. This review compiled and marshaled 229 journal articles to map the landscape of research in CFL since 1990. Data from the sampled studies reveals an upsurge in research intensity across several key areas of focus. We also report on the research methods employed, participant characteristics, and locations. This mapping of the field enables an identification of lacunae in the existing literature and we conclude that future studies will need to shift the focus from adult learners to K-12 students.
