Picking Up Where University Preparation Left Off: A Case Study of a District's Leadership Academy

Abstract

University and school district partnerships are one of the cornerstones of effective principal preparation programming. However, as school districts are faced with staffing their schools with highly-effective principals, many districts are forming their own leadership programs to grow their own principals without university support. This study examines one of these district-sponsored leadership academies to determine how districts are preparing aspiring assistant principals for school leadership. The findings of the study have implications for both university principal preparation programs and school districts and suggest that aspiring leaders will be better prepared to lead complex and demanding schools when districts and universities work together in a viable and mutually beneficial partnership.
