How to Study Smart: Insights From an Evidence-Based Learning Strategy Intervention

Abstract

Applying effective learning strategies during self-study, such as practice testing, are important to build long-term knowledge. Students, however, have low metacognitive knowledge and rarely use effective learning strategies. This study tests a prototype of an evidence-based learning strategy intervention aiming to foster awareness about, reflection on, and practice of effective learning strategies. The fidelity of the design and the process of implementation in a curriculum were investigated by evaluation questionnaires, focus group discussions with students and trainers. Results show that the intervention was relevant for students, made students aware and stimulated reflection. However, more support and guidance in practice are necessary. A thorough train-the-trainer program is needed to ensure a successful implementation in the curriculum.
