Identification and Development of Expertise in Commercial Workplaces: Findings From an Interview Study

Sat, April 18, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

Expertise is characterized by consistently high performance in a domain due to high competencies (Ericsson, 2006; Gruber & Stöger, 2011). In contrast to classical domains of expertise research such as chess, expertise in less structured domains is more difficult to identify because there are no standards for comparison (Ericsson, 2006), and expertise is generally defined by high performance in relation to peers (Chi, 2006). This also applies to commercial domains in which expertise has hardly been researched. 21 peer-nominated experts (Ericsson, 2006) from the wholesale and banking sectors were interviewed. Mayring's content analysis is based on deductive categorization. The analysis shows typical work tasks and factors, influencing expertise development. In addition, types of expertise at commercial workplaces were defined.
