Abstract

This socioculturally framed case study investigates young children’s joyful interaction during a literacy project in a Finnish early childhood education and care setting (9 children and 2 adults). The empirical data collection was framed by an ethnographic logic of inquiry, and the analysis methods drew on video-analysis and multimodal interaction analysis. The study makes salient three dimensions of joyful interaction, that is joy as a distributed practice, a sociomaterial aspect, and the embodiedness of joyful expressions. The findings suggest that creative and multimodal practices are important for promoting children’s joyful interaction in their literacy learning activities in early years education.
