Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to provide historical perspective on the importance of and attention to the moral character or ethos of teachers. In the United States, it has long been held that teachers need to be of good moral character. Teachers need to know their subject matter and have the pedagogical expertise to convey that subject matter in differentiated ways so that all students can learn, but they also need to embody the moral character that reflects the highest position of public trust in society. In this way, teachers can be both effective and responsible in carrying out their influential role and respected function. This paper explores this role and connects it to the preparation of teachers.
