Supporting Cross-Cultural Supervision: International Doctoral Students' Experiences Working With Preservice Teachers

Abstract

This proposal shares a research project on international university supervisors to give voice to their perceptions and experiences of their supervision work in the U.S. context. Three international doctoral students who were hired as supervisors of pre-service teachers at a large public university in the Southeastern United States participated in in-depth interviews as well as observations of their practicum seminars and coaching conversations with pre-service teachers. Findings revealed key salient characteristics of international supervisors, common challenges, and perceived contributions made to pre-service teachers’ professional development and school communities. We suggest it is the responsibility of faculty in teacher education programs to better understanding the potential benefits of supporting international doctoral students as supervisors of preservice teachers.
