Abstract

Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are a format of distance education which faces some challenges, including high dropout rates, low levels of student-teacher interaction, and low representation of poor and less educated learners. Due to the MOOC openness, a learner needs to have motivation and a high level of awareness for participation in the course successfully. Studies have shown that learners’ motivation is a significant predictor of the level of engagement in a MOOC. However, the role of motivation in a MOOC completion remains questionable. In our study, we estimated the role of motivation in a MOOC completion, controlling for the characteristics of participants and their level of engagement with the course materials.
