From Common Core to Instructional Recommendations for Writing: Studying State-Sponsored Writing-Focused Resources

Abstract

The adoption of common standards provided an opportunity for states to share curricular and instructional materials, yet little is known about the materials being created or shared, or how writing instruction is positioned in this policy context. State educational agencies support teachers’ understandings and implementation of new policies through providing professional development and curricular resources. This study examines writing-focused resources from the websites of 51 state educational agencies (50 states and DC) to understand the types of tools available for writing instruction and analyzes the visions of writing instruction communicated through state-provided curricular resources.
