Educational Correlates in the Transition to Independent Living

Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This study performed a secondary data analysis of the National Longitudinal Transition Study 2 (NLTS2) to identify school and family factors associated with different postsecondary living options (living independently, with a family/guardian, and in a supervised setting). Findings suggest that participating in community activities is associated with an increase in the likelihood of living independently, inclusion and taking a leadership role in transition planning are associated with a decrease in the likelihood of living in a supervised setting, and having independent living as the primary IEP goal is associated with an increase in the likelihood of living in a supervised setting. These results are used to make practice, policy, and teacher preparation recommendations.
