"I Had So Many Conflicts in My Mind": Navigating the Doctoral Journey Across Languages and Cultures

Sat, April 18, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Situated on the broad landscape of international education and informed by theories of identity and experience, this longitudinal narrative study unravels an Asian international student’s story of living and learning in the United States. It illustrates how she constantly negotiates her inner conflicts concerning culture and language along her doctoral learning journey and gradually comes to terms with her own routes in the becoming of an educational researcher. The paper takes a critical view of language and culture and underscores the role of personal and institutional empowerment for international students to promote global understanding and inclusion.
