Supporting Use of Survey Data to Strengthen Organizational Conditions for Improvement in Early Education

Abstract

School climate has consistently been found to be related to student outcomes. Research focused on particular organizational aspects of ECE programs—strong leadership or relational trust —suggests that programs with supportive climate more likely exhibit higher instructional quality. ECE improvement efforts aimed at classroom-level features are plentiful, yet very few explicitly target program-level organizational processes. Reliable and valid survey measurement of organizational conditions in ECE settings is now available. A research-practice partnership studied practitioners’ administration of surveys and use of the data through rapid-cycle improvement protocols. Findings and video demonstrates that the data visualizations made the data actionable and accessible and that the protocols promoted adoption of novel rapid-cycle improvement processes and empowered incremental changes at organizational and classroom levels.
